Once as a girl, Afia and a few of her neighbor friends had decided to see if they could find the Forever Nothing. Folks from all over the Duchy knew Bakunini had famous “haunted” spots, where the Forever Nothing festered and roamed. But most younger folks within Bakunini had never seen these specters at all. The girls planned their mission under the disguise of an innocent sleepover, where they would sneak out after dark and roam the city in search of ghosts, proving once and for all the rumors were true.

Afia had led the escapade, convinced there was a source of Forever Nothing by the bridge’s base. But the girls hardly made it further than Afia’s mother’s potion shop before they were caught by the local grocer. After all, a pack of four giddy ten-year-old girls out after dark was hardly inconspicuous.

But the grocer took pity on the girls in search of adventure, and welcomed the them into her flat. There her glassy-eyed grandmother, between her raspy coughs, told them a quiet and spooky story of her encounter Forever Nothing.

When the parents came to retrieve the brave youth, Afia had been thoroughly enchanted. But as she’d grown older and her studies had dried out her imagination, she wasn’t so certain something that fantastic could be true.

Besides, wouldn’t they know about something so magical at her magical university?
